The Going Green Store invites you to come check out our new 50 Mile Food & Friends initiative. Opening May 18th, our new local foods grocery section will showcase foods grown and produced within 50 miles of Licking County, as well as foods from further afield that we think are important for health reasons. You’ll find the shelves, fridge and freezer stocked with local, grassfed meats and cheeses and fresh, locally-grown produce from Bird’s Haven Farms, The Kale Yard, and Sunbeam Family Farm. We already have Ohio favorites such as Shagbark Seed & Mill Co. and Luna Burger, and others are on their way. And we also have a gluten free section for those avoiding wheat and gluten. You can find our “50 Mile Friends” scattered throughout the store – locally produced soaps, herbal health products, cards, earthworm castings, and more!

Why 50 Mile Food? It’s neighborly! We like to support our friends and neighbors first, and see our dollars go toward strengthening our local economy. It’s also about health. When we eat fresh, whole foods free of chemicals we take a big step to protect our well-being. Fresher foods taste better and are better for us with higher nutritional value. 50 Mile Food also helps the planet by greatly reducing our carbon footprint and supporting small, sustainable farms that steward the earth. And, it’s just more fun this way! Good food tells good stories and we lead richer lives when we know where our food comes from.

Someone asked me today if I knew how she could recycle some “disgusting” old shoes. What a great question! If you have shoes that are “lightly used”, there are a few options for passing them along to those in need — but if they truly are at the end of their useful life, it’s not so easy to keep them out of the landfill.

I started by congratulating her for wearing her shoes until it really is time for them to go. As I’m sure you know, the best way to reduce our contributions to the landfill is to buy less to begin with and get the full use out of everything we buy.

Honestly, I don’t know of any good options for recycling dress shoes that are way past their best (if you do, please tell me). However, there is a nifty program being run by Nike to recycle old sports shoes:

The Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program breaks down sports shoes and reuses them to make athletic surfaces (running tracks, basketball and tennis courts, etc.) Unfortunately, there is no Nike drop off point nearby. But here are the options for folks in Central Ohio:

(1) You can mail them to: Nike Grind Processing, 3552 Avenue of Commerce, Memphis, TN 38125

(2) You can deliver them to one of these drop-off points in Ohio:

Nike Factory Store
549 South Chillocothe Rd, #321
Aurora, OH 44202

Nike Factory Store
8890 Factory Shops Blvd Bld 8 Twr 4
Jefforsonville, OH 43128

Converse Outlet Store
501 Premium Outlet Drive
Monroe, OH 45050

Nike Factory Store
505 Premium Outlet Dr
Monroe, OH 45050

(3) Or, if you are really keen, you could start a Shoe Drive, to collect shoes and send them to Nike. The Going Green Store doesn’t qualify to do a Nike shoe drive ourselves, because we are a for-profit business. But we would happily sponsor this kind of an event, and partner with a local qualifying organization to make it happen. Give me a call if you’d like to start something in Licking County and we can discuss it!

Here’s what Nike has to say about starting a shoe drive:

If you’re part of a group such as a school, sports team or nonprofit organization, you could hold a shoe drive and collect 500 or more pairs of worn-out sneakers with your group.

How Do Shoe Drives Work? Nike Reuse-A-Shoe teams up with groups dedicated to bringing environmental awareness to their local communities by holding a shoe recycling drive. Some groups incorporate their shoe drive into a larger event, such as a local green week or 5k race, while others simply hold a drive with their class or school. If you’d like to have a shoe drive, you must:

• Fill out an online application.

• Be part of a group like a school/college, nonprofit, youth organization, recycling center or government (no businesses/corporations).

• Be located in the continental United States.

• Commit to collecting between 500 and 2,500 pairs of shoes.

• Remove all non-recyclable shoes before dropping them off.

• Box and bring your shoes to your local FedEx for shipping.

Why Do Groups Need to Apply? Reuse-A-Shoe is about making Nike a more sustainable company – and part of being sustainable is being efficient. That’s why we need to know how many groups are hosting drives – so we can do the most with our shipping resources, and get as many groups involved as possible. Thanks to dedicated fans like you, the Reuse-A-Shoe program has grown – which means we’re also nearing capacity at our recycling facilities. While we’re working hard to expand the program – and transport and reuse those shoes efficiently – we have to limit the number of shoe drives we support in the meantime.

This is our first installment of what we hope will be a valuable resource for you and like-minded others who are trying to go green. When we say “going green”, we mean paying attention to the environmental and health impacts of lifestyle and purchasing habits and making changes to be more health-conscious and planet-friendly. We start our name with an action verb because that’s the basis for our philosophy on all this green stuff: change happens over time, you do what you can, take one step, start with the easy stuff. We’re going green, and we hope you will join us.

We know that “green” means something a little different to almost everyone, so we will throw a wide net with this blog to cover many diverse topics. Although our knowledge is expanding every day, we won’t claim to be the experts on every topic. Our intent is to provide you with information and thought-provoking commentary, sharing what we learn as we continue to delve into this field. As much as possible we will cover issues that are specifically relevant to Central Ohio. And we will do our best to be entertaining.

The blog will feature our reviews of green products, news about what’s happening in Ohio related to local food and farming issues, and our thoughts on a wide range of issues pertinent to our everyday life, including energy and water conservation, health impacts of common products, garden-to-table eating, waste reduction, recycling, and composting. There will be, no doubt, some environmental advocacy thrown in from time to time. As residents of Licking County and Central Ohio, we want to highlight local events and initiatives in our community, as well as local individuals, farmers, artisans, businesses and organizations that are making positive changes right here in our backyard.

The goal here is not to tell you what to do: our aim is to provide you with useful information so you can make informed decisions as you choose what is best for you, your family, your business and your community. We believe that given the facts, individuals will make socially and personally responsible choices that benefit everyone.

Our community is rich with knowledgable individuals who are like-minded, and we are committed to learn and grow with you. We welcome and encourage our readers to share their opinions and knowledge on anything we cover here.

So please join us. Subscribe to our blog, visit our website often, follow us on Twitter and Facebook. And come by the store. We hope you will enjoy what we have to say and that it will cause you to ponder your impact on this magnificent planet of ours.
